Course ContentConstructing Sentences
Hello Future Storyteller! Let's Build Sentences!
Habari! Have you ever built something with colourful blocks? You take one block, then another, and you put them together to make a beautiful house or a tall tower. Writing sentences is just like that! We take small words, put them together in the right order, and build a wonderful idea that someone else can understand. Today, we are going to become master builders of sentences!
What is a Super Sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought. It’s not just a few jumbled words; it’s a full idea! If I say "dog running", that's not a full idea. But if I say "The dog is running in the field," now you have a complete picture in your head! That’s a super sentence!
Image Suggestion: A vibrant and colourful digital illustration of two Kenyan children, a boy and a girl in school uniform, happily building a tower with large, lettered blocks. The background is a sunny Kenyan field with an acacia tree. The style is cheerful and cartoonish.
Our Two Magic Ingredients
Every super sentence needs at least two magic ingredients, just like you need flour and water to make chapati! Let's learn about them.
- The 'Who' or 'What' (The Naming Part): This is the person, place, animal, or thing the sentence is about. We can call it the Subject. Examples are: Kamau, the cat, the matatu, Nairobi.
- The 'Doing' or 'Being' Word (The Action Part): This tells us what the 'Who' or 'What' is doing or being. We can call this the Verb. Examples are: jumps, is eating, drives, is big.
The Secret Sentence Formula
To make a basic sentence, we can use a very simple formula. It’s like a recipe for writing! Let's look at our simple sentence calculation.
Step 1: Choose a 'Who' or 'What' (Subject)
Step 2: Choose a 'Doing' Word (Verb)
--------------------------------------------------
RESULT: [Subject] + [Verb] = A Simple Sentence!
Real-World Scenario: Think about your mother cooking githeri. She takes the maize ('What') and she cooks it ('Doing'). Together, they make a meal! "Mother cooks." is a perfect, simple sentence. It has a 'Who' (Mother) and a 'Doing' word (cooks).
Let's See it in Action!
Now, let's use our formula to build some sentences. We will take a block from the 'Who/What' box and a block from the 'Doing' box and join them together.
Let's build!
[ The bird ] + [ flies. ] ====> The bird flies.
+----------+ +--------+
| The bird | --> | flies. |
+----------+ +--------+
[ The children ] + [ play. ] ====> The children play.
+----------------+ +-------+
| The children | --> | play. |
+----------------+ +-------+
Image Suggestion: A realistic, bright photo of a bustling open-air market in Kenya, like a Maasai Market or a Gikomba Market. There are many people, colourful fabrics, fresh vegetables, and lots of activity. This image can be used to inspire students to create their own sentences about what they see.
Don't Forget the Finishing Touches!
A great builder always makes sure their creation is strong and looks good. Sentences have two important rules to make them look perfect.
- The Capital Letter: Every sentence must begin with a big letter (Capital Letter). It’s like the door to your sentence house! Instead of 'asha reads', we write 'Asha reads'.
- The Full Stop: Every telling sentence must end with a full stop (.). This little dot tells the reader that the idea is finished. It’s like putting a roof on your house!
So, our perfect sentence is: Asha reads.
Your Turn, Champion!
Fantastic work! Now it is your turn to be the sentence builder. Grab your pencil and exercise book and let’s get to work. You can do it!
- Match and Write: Match the 'Who/What' part with a 'Doing' part and write the full sentence. Remember your capital letter and full stop!
- The baby / runs
- The car / cries
- The athlete / drives
- Fix the Sentence: This sentence is broken. Can you fix it by adding a capital letter and a full stop?
the goat eats grass
- Create Your Own: Write one complete sentence about your favourite Kenyan food. Is it ugali, pilau, or maybe mandazi?
Well done! You have learned the secret to building amazing sentences. Keep practising, and soon you will be able to write incredible stories, letters, and so much more. Every great writer started by learning how to build one perfect sentence at a time.
Habari Mwanafunzi! Let's Build Super Sentences!
Hello there, future author! Welcome to a fun adventure in writing. Today, we are going to learn how to build something amazing with words. Think of it like building with blocks or cooking your favourite meal like chapati. You need the right pieces, in the right order, to make something wonderful. Today, our building blocks are words, and we are going to build strong, clear sentences!
Image Suggestion: A vibrant, colourful illustration in the style of a children's storybook. Show a smiling Kenyan child, one boy and one girl, happily arranging large, colourful letter blocks on the grass under an acacia tree. The blocks they are arranging spell out "A cat naps." In the background, a sunny Kenyan landscape with rolling hills.
What is a Sentence, Anyway?
A sentence is a group of words that shares a complete thought or idea. It tells us a full story, even if it's a very short one! A super sentence has two very important rules:
- It must always start with a Capital Letter (a big letter, like A, B, C).
- It must end with a special mark: a full stop (.), a question mark (?), or an exclamation mark (!).
The Building Blocks of a Sentence
Every good sentence has at least two main parts, just like a bicycle needs two wheels to move!
Block 1: The 'Who' or 'What' (The Naming Part)
This part tells us who or what the sentence is about. It's our main character! It can be a person, an animal, a place, or a thing.
O
/|\ <-- This is our 'Who' or 'What'.
/ \
Juma, a cow, the school, a car
For example, in our Kenyan home, the 'Who' or 'What' could be:
- Akinyi
- The big matatu
- My cat, Simba
Block 2: The 'Doing' Word (The Action Part)
This part tells us what the 'Who' or 'What' is doing. It's the action! It's the exciting part!
O
/|\ ----> jumps! eats! runs!
/ \
Action! <-- This is our 'Doing' word.
Examples of 'Doing' words are:
- eats (ugali)
- runs (to the shop)
- is sleeping (under the tree)
Let's Build! The Sentence Formula
Now, let's put our blocks together to build a complete, super sentence. It’s like a simple math problem!
[The 'Who' or 'What'] + [The 'Doing' Word] = A Complete Idea!
Let's try it:
- Step 1: Pick a 'Who' or 'What'. Let's pick The goat.
- Step 2: Pick a 'Doing' Word. Let's pick eats.
- Step 3: Put them together and add a full stop.
Our Super Sentence is: The goat eats.
See? It's a complete thought! We can even add more details to make our sentence even better:
The goat eats the green grass.
More Examples from Our Home, Kenya!
Scenario 1: At the Shamba (Farm)
Mr. Kamau is a farmer in Nakuru. Every morning, he wakes up early to work on his shamba.
- Mr. Kamau plants maize.
- The cows graze in the field.

Scenario 2: Going to the Market
Mama is going to Marikiti market in Nairobi to buy food for dinner. The market is very busy!
- Mama buys sukuma wiki.
- A man sells sweet mangoes.
- We love to eat githeri.
Image Suggestion: A cheerful, bustling Kenyan market scene. A mother (Mama) with a kiondo (basket) is smiling as she buys fresh sukuma wiki from a friendly vendor. In the background, there are other stalls with colourful fruits and vegetables, and people are walking around. The style should be warm and inviting, like a children's book illustration.
Fanya Mazoezi! (Let's Practice!)
Kazi nzuri! You are doing so well. Now it's your turn to be the builder.

- play / children / football / The → _________________________
Activity 2: Finish the Sentence
I will start a sentence, and you finish it with your own wonderful idea!
- The dog _____________________________________.
- My friend and I ________________________________.
- On Saturday, I ____________________________________.
