Habari Mwanafunzi! Welcome to Our Weather Adventure!
Have you ever left home in the morning wearing a warm sweater, but by lunchtime, you felt so hot you wanted to take it off? Or have you ever been playing outside under a clear blue sky when suddenly, dark clouds gather and it starts to rain? That's because weather is always changing! Today, we are going to be weather detectives and learn all about weather changes right here in our beautiful Kenya.
Our Weather Changes During the Day
The weather doesn't stay the same for the whole day. It has a daily routine, just like you! Let's look at a typical day.
- In the Morning: When you wake up to go to school, the sun is just rising. The air is often cool and calm. Sometimes, you might see dew on the grass or even a little fog. This is why Mama tells you to wear a sweater!
- At Midday: By the time you have your lunch, the sun is high in the sky. It is usually the hottest and sunniest part of the day. This is the perfect time for playing outside, but we must remember to drink plenty of water and sometimes play under the shade of a big acacia tree.
- In the Evening: As the sun begins to set, the air starts to get cool again. The shadows become long, and it might get a bit windy. It's time to finish our games and go home.
A Story from Kisumu: Akinyi loves to watch the birds by Lake Victoria in the morning when it's cool. By midday, she helps her grandmother spread the omena fish to dry in the hot sun. In the evening, a cool breeze blows from the lake, and she knows it's time for dinner.

On the left, a Kenyan schoolchild in uniform is walking to school in the cool morning with a light sweater on. In the middle, the same child is playing happily under a shady tree during a very sunny midday. On the right, the child is walking home as the sun sets, with a gentle evening breeze blowing.
Our Weather Changes with the Seasons
In Kenya, we don't have winter with snow! Instead, we have two main seasons that change during the year. These are the Rainy Season and the Dry Season.
1. The Rainy Season (Masika)
This is when we receive a lot of rain! The trees become green, the flowers bloom, and our shamba (farm) is very happy. Farmers are busy planting crops like mahindi (maize) and maharagwe (beans). The rivers are full, and everything looks fresh and alive!

2. The Dry Season (Kiangazi)
This is the sunny season! There is very little rain, and the sun shines brightly most days. The ground can become dry and dusty. This is the time when farmers harvest their crops. In our game parks like the Maasai Mara or Amboseli, animals gather around the few rivers and waterholes to drink water.

Hello, Young Explorer! Let's Discover How the Weather Changes!
Have you ever left home in the morning wearing a light shirt because it was sunny, but on your way back, you wished you had a sweater because it became cold and rainy? That's the weather playing a fun game of change! Today, we are going to become Weather Detectives and learn all about how and why the weather changes around us in our beautiful country, Kenya.
Image Suggestion: A vibrant, cheerful cartoon-style illustration of a group of diverse Kenyan school children in their uniforms, looking up at the sky with curiosity. One child points at a sun peeking from behind a cloud, another holds a hand out to feel for rain, and a third watches leaves blow in the wind. The school compound has an acacia tree in the background.
What Does "Weather Change" Mean?
Weather is what the air outside feels like. Is it hot or cold? Is it wet or dry? Is the wind blowing softly or is it very still? Weather change is simply when the weather doesn't stay the same. It can change in just a few hours, or even in a few minutes!
Here are some common weather changes you might see:
- From Sunny to Cloudy: The bright sun gets hidden by clouds.
- From Calm to Windy: The air starts moving and you can feel a breeze.
- From Dry to Rainy: The clouds become dark and heavy, and rain starts to fall.
- From Hot to Cool: The hot afternoon sun sets, and the evening becomes cool and pleasant.
Let's Draw the Weather!
We can use simple drawings to show different types of weather. These are fun to make!

A Story from Nairobi: Juma's Football Game
Juma woke up on Saturday morning in Nairobi and saw a bright, sunny sky. "Yay! Perfect weather for playing football!" he shouted. He called his friends to meet at the field. But by afternoon, big, grey clouds rolled in from over the Ngong Hills. The wind started to blow, and soon, it began to rain heavily! Juma's football game was cancelled. He was sad, but then his friend Amina said, "Don't worry, the weather changed, so our plans can change too! Let's go inside and play a board game." Juma learned that you must always be ready for the weather to change.
Image Suggestion: A split-panel cartoon. On the left, a sunny Nairobi skyline with children playing football happily. On the right, the same scene but with dark, rainy clouds, and the children are running for shelter, laughing as they get a little wet.
Let's Be Weather Detectives with Numbers!
We can keep a chart to track how the weather changes. Let's imagine we watched the weather for 5 days last week at school. Our chart looks like this:
My Weather Chart
---------------------
Day | Weather
---------------------
Monday | Sunny ☀️
Tuesday | Sunny ☀️
Wednesday | Cloudy ☁️
Thursday | Rainy 🌧️
Friday | Sunny ☀️
---------------------
Now, let's do some simple Weather Math!
Question: How many days were sunny?
Step 1: Look at the chart for "Sunny ☀️".
Step 2: Count them. Monday is 1, Tuesday is 2, Friday is 3.
Step 3: Answer: There were 3 sunny days!
Great job! See? You can use math to understand the weather.
What Should We Do When the Weather Changes?
Being a good Weather Detective means you know what to do to stay safe and comfortable. Our clothes and activities can change with the weather!
- When it becomes hot and sunny: It's a good time to wear a hat and light clothes. Remember to drink plenty of water!
- When it becomes rainy and wet: It's time to get your umbrella or wear a raincoat and gumboots to keep dry.
- When it becomes cold and chilly: You should wear a warm sweater or jacket to keep your body warm.
- When it becomes windy: Hold on to your hat! It's fun to fly a kite, but be careful with loose papers that can fly away.
Wonderful! You have learned so much about weather changes. The next time you look outside, try to guess how the weather might change during the day. You are now an official Weather Detective!
Jambo Mwanafunzi! Let's Go on a Weather Adventure!
Have you ever worn a warm sweater in the morning on your way to school in Nairobi, but by lunchtime, the sun was so bright and hot you wished you were in your T-shirt? Or maybe you were playing outside in the shamba, and suddenly, dark clouds rolled in and you had to run inside to escape the rain? That is weather changing! It's like the sky is telling a different story every few hours. Let’s learn about this exciting adventure happening above us every day!
What are the Main Weather Types We See?
Before we see how weather changes, let's remember the main characters in our weather story:
- Sunny: When the sun is shining brightly. It feels warm and everything looks bright! Perfect for playing outside.
- Cloudy: When big, white or grey clouds cover the sun like a blanket. It might feel a little cooler.
- Rainy: When water falls from the clouds. We see this a lot during the long rains in April!
- Windy: When you can feel the air moving and see trees and leaves dancing around.
How Does the Weather Change?
Weather doesn't stay the same all day. It loves to change! Here are some of the most common changes we see in Kenya.
1. From Sunny to Cloudy
Imagine a bright, sunny morning in the Maasai Mara. Suddenly, you see small, fluffy white clouds appear. They float across the sky, and soon, more clouds join them until they cover the sun.

2. From Cloudy to Rainy
When the clouds get bigger, darker, and full of water, they become very heavy. When they can't hold any more water, it falls down as rain! This is what happens during our rainy seasons, bringing water for our crops.

A Story from Kisumu:Akinyi was helping her mother in the garden near Lake Victoria. The sky was grey and cloudy. Suddenly, she felt a small drop of water on her nose, then another on her hand! "Mama, mvua inakuja!" she shouted. Soon, the gentle drops turned into a heavy rain, and the beautiful sound of rain falling on their roof filled the air. They were happy because the rain would help their sukuma wiki grow strong.
3. From Cool to Hot (and Back to Cool!)
The sun is like a big heater for our Earth. In the morning, when the sun is low, it is cool. This is why you need a sweater when you leave for school. As the sun climbs higher in the sky towards midday, it gets hotter and hotter! In the evening, as the sun goes down, it becomes cool again.
We can measure this change with a thermometer. Let's do some simple weather maths!
Let's see the temperature change!
Morning temperature in Limuru: 16 degrees (Chilly!)
Midday temperature in Limuru: 24 degrees (Warm and nice!)
How much warmer did it get?
Step 1: Take the bigger number (24)
Step 2: Subtract the smaller number (16)
Calculation: 24 - 16 = 8
It got 8 degrees warmer! Isn't that a big change?
Image Suggestion: A simple, child-friendly cartoon graphic showing three scenes side-by-side. The first shows a sun rising over a hill with a child in a sweater. The second shows the sun high in the sky with the child playing happily in a t-shirt. The third shows the sun setting and the child heading home, putting the sweater back on.
Why is it Important to Know About Weather Changes?
Knowing how the weather can change helps us in our daily lives. It helps us decide:
- What to wear: Should you carry a raincoat or wear a sunhat?
- When to play: It's best to play outside when it's sunny, not during a thunderstorm.
- For our farmers: Farmers need to know when the rains are coming to plant their maize and beans.
A Farmer's Plan:Mr. Kamau, a farmer near Mount Kenya, looks at the sky every day in March. He is waiting for the clouds to gather and the long rains to begin. He knows that once the rain starts, it is the perfect time to plant his seeds. If he knows the weather is changing to rainy, he can prepare his shamba for a good harvest!
Your Turn: Be a Weather Watcher!
Now it's your turn to be a weather expert! Try this fun activity:
- Get a notebook and call it "My Weather Diary".
- Each day, draw the weather you see in the morning. Is it sunny? Cloudy?
- Then, in the afternoon, draw the weather again. Did it change?
- You will see for yourself just how much the weather loves to change!
Keep looking at the sky and noticing the changes. You are now a fantastic Environmental Activities student and a super weather watcher! Kwaheri!
