Habari Mwanafunzi Mpendwa! Welcome to our English Lesson!
Are you ready to have some fun with words today? Look around you. What do you see? A chair? A book? Maybe you can see a bird outside the window. Everything we see has a name, and today we will learn all about these special naming words and the amazing action words that go with them!
Image Suggestion: A brightly lit, cheerful Kenyan classroom. A friendly teacher smiles at a small group of eager students of different genders in their school uniforms. On the blackboard behind the teacher, it says "Welcome to English Activities!" with drawings of a book and a pen.
Part 1: Discovering Nouns (Naming Words)
A Noun is a word that names something. It’s like a label! We can put nouns into four simple groups. Let's learn them!
- A Person: This is who we are talking about. Examples: teacher, doctor, Juma, mama.
- A Place: This is where something is. Examples: school, Nairobi, kitchen, shamba (farm).
- An Animal: This is any kind of creature. Examples: dog, simba (lion), kuku (chicken), elephant.
- A Thing: This is any object you can see or touch. Examples: book, sufuria (pot), ball, pen.
Image Suggestion: A colourful cartoon-style collage showing four quadrants. Top-left shows a smiling Kenyan farmer (Person). Top-right shows a beautiful landscape of the Maasai Mara with acacia trees (Place). Bottom-left shows a graceful giraffe eating leaves (Animal). Bottom-right shows a colourful kiondo basket (Thing).
Let's draw it to remember!
NOUNS are NAMING words!

Part 2: Let's Do Something! (Action Words - Verbs)
Now that we can name things, let's make them move! A Verb is an action word. It is a "doing" word. It tells us what a person, animal, or thing is DOING.
Think about what you do every day:
- You eat your breakfast.
- You walk to school.
- You read a book.
- You play with your friends.
- You sleep at night.
All the bold words are verbs! They show action!
A Quick Story about Akinyi:
Every morning, Akinyi wakes up. She washes her face and eats porridge. She runs to the bus stop. At school, she writes in her book and listens to the teacher. After school, Akinyi kicks a ball with her friends. See all the things Akinyi can do? Those are all verbs!
Part 3: Nouns and Verbs are Best Friends!
Nouns and Verbs work together to make sentences. A sentence is like a team! The noun is the player, and the verb is the action the player does.
We can use a simple formula to make a sentence:
Noun + Verb = A Simple Sentence
(Who/What) (Is Doing What?)
------------------------------------------------------
The dog + barks. = The dog barks.
Juma + eats. = Juma eats.
Birds + fly. = Birds fly.
Let's see this team in action!
WHO? (NOUN) DOES WHAT? (VERB)

Your Turn to be a Word Detective!
Are you ready for a challenge? In the sentences below, find the Noun (the naming word) and the Verb (the action word). Let's do the first one together!
- The cat sleeps.
- Noun: cat
- Verb: sleeps
- The baby cries.
- A fish swims.
- The teacher writes.
- A car moves.
Check your answers below! Did you find them all?
- 2. Noun: baby, Verb: cries
- 3. Noun: fish, Verb: swims
- 4. Noun: teacher, Verb: writes
- 5. Noun: car, Verb: moves

Jambo, Word Explorer! Let's Discover Naming and Doing Words!
Habari yako? Welcome to a super fun adventure in English! Today, we are going to learn about two very important types of words that are like the superstars of every sentence. They are called Nouns and Verbs. Are you ready? Let's go!
Part 1: Meet the Nouns - The Naming Words!
Imagine you are looking around your home or shule (school). Everything you can see has a name, right? A noun is simply a naming word. It names a:
- Person: like mama, baba, mwalimu (teacher), Juma, or a baby.
- Place: like Nairobi, a school, the duka (shop), or your nyumba (house).
- Thing: like a book, a pen, a mpira (ball), or a delicious chapati!
Story Time!
Juma took his mpira to the park. His mwalimu said it was a good idea. Can you see the naming words? We just used five nouns!
Here is a little picture of a noun, a house (nyumba):

Image Suggestion: A vibrant and colourful digital painting of a bustling Kenyan market scene (soko). There are women in bright kitenge dresses selling fresh mangoes and sukuma wiki. A small boy, Juma, is holding his mother's hand, looking excitedly at a stall selling wooden toys. The style is warm, friendly, and cartoonish for a children's book.
Part 2: Let's Count Our Nouns!
We can even do some fun maths with nouns! Let's count the nouns in this sentence:
"The teacher reads a book in the classroom."
Let's find them step-by-step!
Step 1: Find the PERSON.
teacher ................. 1 Noun
Step 2: Find the THINGS.
book .................... 1 Noun
Step 3: Find the PLACE.
classroom ............... 1 Noun
Step 4: Let's add them up!
1 + 1 + 1 = 3
Total Nouns = 3! Well done!
Part 3: Meet the Verbs - The Action Words!
Now for the second superstar! A verb is an action word or a doing word. Verbs are what nouns DO! If you can DO it, it's probably a verb!
- Can you run? Run is a verb! (Kimbia!)
- Can you eat? Eat is a verb! (Kula!)
- Can you jump? Jump is a verb! (Ruka!)
- Can you read or sing? Read and sing are verbs! (Soma na imba!)
Look at this little person running. Running is the action!
O

RUN! RUN! RUN!
Story Time!
The children play outside. A bird sings in the tree. The sun shines brightly. I love grammar! All the bold words are verbs - they show action!
Image Suggestion: A bright, sunny illustration of Kenyan children playing football on a grassy field. One girl in a yellow t-shirt is about to kick the ball with a big smile. Another boy is jumping to block it. The action and movement should be the main focus of the image.
Part 4: Nouns and Verbs Together!
Nouns and verbs are best friends. They need each other to make a good sentence. A sentence usually has a noun (who or what is doing something) and a verb (the action).
Noun (Who/What?) + Verb (Does what?) = A Simple Sentence!
+-----------+ +-----------+ +-------------------+
| NOUN | ----> | VERB | ====> | A Simple Sentence |
| (e.g. Dog)| | (e.g. barks)| | (The dog barks.) |
+-----------+ +-----------+ +-------------------+
- Amina (Noun) + sings (Verb). = Amina sings.
- The car (Noun) + moves (Verb). = The car moves.
- Kuku (Noun) + eats (Verb). = The kuku eats.
Part 5: Your Turn, Champion!
Let's see what you have learned! In each sentence below, can you find the Noun and the Verb?
- The baby sleeps.
- Noun: __________
- Verb: __________
- Birds fly.
- Noun: __________
- Verb: __________
- The teacher writes.
- Noun: __________
- Verb: __________
(Answers: 1. Noun: baby, Verb: sleeps. 2. Noun: birds, Verb: fly. 3. Noun: teacher, Verb: writes.)
Fantastic Work!
Wow! You did an amazing job today. You learned that Nouns are naming words and Verbs are action words. You are becoming a grammar expert! Keep looking for nouns and verbs everywhere you go. Kwaheri for now!
Jambo Mwanafunzi! Welcome to the Safari of Words!
Hello there, super student! Today, we are going on an exciting adventure. We are going to become word detectives! Our mission is to find two very special types of words that make all our stories come to life. These words are called Nouns and Verbs. Are you ready? Let's begin!
Part 1: Nouns - The 'Naming' Words!
Imagine you are looking around your classroom or home. Everything you see has a name, right? The chair, the table, your teacher, your friend. All these naming words are called Nouns!
A Noun is a word that names a:
- Person (Mtu)
- Place (Pahali)
- Animal (Mnyama)
- Thing (Kitu)
Let's remember this with a fun code: P.P.A.T.!
P. P. A. T.
| | | |
| | | +---- Thing (e.g., kitabu, mpira)
| | +------- Animal (e.g., simba, kuku)
| +---------- Place (e.g., shule, Nairobi)
+------------- Person (e.g., Kamau, mwalimu)
Let's look at some Kenyan examples:
- People: Akinyi, Wanjiru, a daktari (doctor), a mama.
- Places: Mombasa, the soko (market), our shule (school), Kenya.
- Animals: A twiga (giraffe), an ndovu (elephant), a mbuzi (goat).
- Things: A kikombe (cup), a gari (car), some ugali, a panga.
Let's Play a Game!
Look at this short story. Can you spot the Nouns (the naming words)?
Juma went to the shamba. He saw a brown kuku. The kuku was eating mahindi from a sahani.
(The nouns are: Juma, shamba, kuku, mahindi, sahani)
Image Suggestion:A vibrant, colourful digital illustration of a busy Kenyan market ('soko'). Show a woman ('mama mboga') selling vegetables like 'sukuma wiki' and tomatoes. A young boy is buying a mango. In the background, there is a matatu and a stall selling handmade baskets. The style should be cheerful and child-friendly.
Part 2: Verbs - The 'Doing' Words!
Now, let's meet the second type of special word! Nouns are the names, but what are they DOING? The words that show action are called Verbs! Verbs are 'doing' words or 'action' words.
Think about what you do all day. You eat, you play, you read, you run! All these action words are Verbs!
O O / __O__
/|\ /|\ / | \
/ \ / \ |
Run Jump Sing
Here are some of our favourite actions (Verbs):
- kimbia (run)
- ruka (jump)
- kula (eat)
- cheza (play)
- soma (read)
- andika (write)
- imba (sing)
Let's Act It Out!
When I say a verb, can you do the action?
Ready? ... Ruka! (Jump!) ... Good! Now, pretend to andika! (Write!) ... Fantastic! You are great with verbs!
Part 3: Nouns + Verbs = Awesome Sentences!
Nouns and Verbs are best friends. They work together to make sentences. A sentence tells us WHO or WHAT is doing an ACTION.
The secret formula for a simple sentence is:
[ Noun ] + [ Verb ] = A Simple Sentence!
(Who/What) (is doing)
Let's try making some sentences:
- The mtoto (child) analia (cries).
- Simba (the lion) anakula (eats).
- Mwalimu (the teacher) anaandika (writes).
- The gari (car) inaenda (goes).
Image Suggestion:A cheerful cartoon illustration of Kenyan school children playing outside during break time. One child is skipping rope ('kuruka kamba'), another is kicking a football, and a group is sitting under a baobab tree reading a book. Each action should be very clear.
Tufanye Mazoezi! (Let's Practice!)
