Course ContentHygiene (Washing Hands)
Habari Mwanafunzi Mwerevu! Hello, Clever Student!
Today, we are going on an exciting adventure to become Health Champions! Our special mission is to learn about a superpower that keeps us strong and healthy. This superpower is... WASHING OUR HANDS!
Let's start with a fun song. Sing with me!
(To the tune of 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat')
Wash, wash, wash your hands,
With some soap and water.
Scrub and rub, and rub and scrub,
To keep the germs away!
Meet the Invisible Troublemakers: Vijidudu (Germs)!
Imagine tiny, invisible creatures called vijidudu (germs). They are so small you cannot see them with your eyes! They love to hide on our hands after we play outside, touch animals, or use the choo (toilet). While some vijidudu are okay, others can make us sick with a tummy ache or a cough.
But don't worry! We have a simple way to defeat them.
Image Suggestion: [A cartoon-style image for kids. Show cute, colorful but mischievous-looking germ characters on a child's hand. The child is looking at their hand through a magnifying glass with a surprised expression. The style should be bright, friendly, and educational, typical of Kenyan children's textbooks.]
When Should We Wash Our Hands?
It is very important to wash our hands at special times to send those vijidudu down the drain. We must always wash our hands:
- After visiting the choo (toilet).
- Before eating our delicious ugali, chapati, or mandazi.
- After playing outside, maybe after making mud pies or playing bano.
- After coughing, sneezing, or blowing our nose.
- After touching animals like the shamba goats or our friendly cats.
The 5 Steps to Super Clean Hands!
Becoming a Handwashing Champion is as easy as 1-2-3-4-5! All you need is maji safi (clean water) and sabuni (soap).

- WET: Turn on the tap and wet your hands with clean, running water.
- LATHER: Use soap and rub your hands together to make lots of bubbles! Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- SCRUB: Keep scrubbing for 20 seconds. That's like singing the "Happy Birthday" song two times slowly! This is the part where we scrub the vijidudu away!
- RINSE: Wash all the soap and bubbles off your hands under clean, running water.
- DRY: Dry your hands using a clean towel or by shaking them in the air.

Germs Math Corner!
Did you know vijidudu can multiply very fast? Let's do some simple maths to see how! If one little germ can become two germs every minute, see what happens!
Step 1: Start with 1 germ.
1 germ
Step 2: After 1 minute, it doubles.
1 + 1 = 2 germs
Step 3: After 2 minutes, they double again!
2 + 2 = 4 germs
Step 4: After 3 minutes, they double again!
4 + 4 = 8 germs
Wow! From just 1 germ to 8 in only three minutes! That's why we must wash them off quickly. Sawa?
A Story: Juma Learns a Lesson
Juma loved to play outside with his puppy, BINGO. One afternoon, after rolling in the dust with Bingo, his mother called him for a snack. "Juma, come for chapati!" Juma was so hungry he ran inside and started eating right away. He forgot to wash his hands! Later that night, his tummy started hurting. "Ouch, my tummy!" he cried. His mother knew why. The invisible vijidudu from playing outside had gone from his hands into his tummy. From that day on, Juma always remembered to wash his hands before eating. He became a Handwashing Champion!
You are a Health Champion!
Well done, Mwanafunzi Mwerevu! You now have the superpower to fight invisible vijidudu and keep yourself and your friends healthy. Remember the 5 steps and wash your hands often. By doing this, you are not just a student, you are a Mabingwa wa Usafi (Hygiene Champion)!
Jambo Health Champion! Let's Talk About Our Superpower!
Did you know you have a superpower that can fight off sickness and keep you strong and healthy? It's not flying or becoming invisible. It's something much simpler and more powerful: WASHING YOUR HANDS!
Today, we will learn how to use this amazing power to chase away tiny, invisible troublemakers called germs (or wadudu in Kiswahili) that can make us feel unwell.
Image Suggestion: A vibrant, colourful digital illustration of a group of happy Kenyan school children in uniform, striking superhero poses. In the centre, one child proudly holds up their sparkling clean hands, which have a faint, magical glow around them. The background is their school compound with acacia trees.
Why Do We Need to Wash Our Hands?
Imagine you have been playing kati outside or helping to shuck maize. Your hands might look a little dirty, but the real problem is the tiny germs you can't see! These germs are like sneaky little bugs that love to hide on our hands. If they get into our bodies when we eat or touch our eyes, nose, or mouth, they can give us a tummy ache or a cold.
We must wash our hands to send these germs down the drain!
When Should We Use Our Superpower?
It is very important to wash our hands at these special times:
- Before eating our food (especially yummy ugali or chapati that we eat with our hands!).
- After visiting the toilet (the choo).
- After playing outside.
- After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
- After touching animals, like a cat or a shamba goat.
- When your hands look dirty.
The 5 Steps to Super Clean Hands!
Just splashing water is not enough! To really defeat the germs, you need to follow the five magic steps. Let's learn them together!
- WET: Turn on the tap and wet your hands with clean, running water.
- LATHER: Use soap! Rub it all over your hands to make lots of bubbles. Soap is the trap for the germs!
- SCRUB: This is the most important step! Scrub your hands for 20 seconds. Make sure you scrub between your fingers, on the back of your hands, and under your nails. You can sing the "Happy Birthday" song two times to know it's long enough!
- RINSE: Wash all the soap and germs away under the clean, running water.
- DRY: Dry your hands with a clean towel or shake them in the air until they are dry.

Hands lathering a bar of soap. 3. Hands scrubbing with bubbles. 4. Hands rinsing under water. 5. Hands being dried with a clean cloth. Each panel is numbered and has a simple keyword (WET, LATHER, SCRUB, RINSE, DRY).
Let's Do Some Germ Math!
Have you ever wondered how fast germs can grow? It's faster than you think! Let's pretend one little germ on your unwashed hand decides to invite a friend every minute. See what happens!
Let's see how many germs there are at the "Germ Party"!
Start Time : You have just 1 germ.
After 1 min : 1 x 2 = 2 germs
After 2 mins: 2 x 2 = 4 germs
After 3 mins: 4 x 2 = 8 germs
After 4 mins: 8 x 2 = 16 germs
After 5 mins: 16 x 2 = 32 germs!
In just 5 minutes, you go from 1 germ to over 30 germs!
Washing your hands stops the party immediately!
Story Time: Chebet and the Juicy Mango
Chebet loved playing with her friends under the big mango tree in her compound. One sunny afternoon, a big, ripe mango fell to the ground! Chebet was so excited. She picked it up, wiped it on her dress, and took a big, sweet bite. That evening, Chebet’s tummy started to hurt. "Ouch! Mama, my tummy!" she cried. Her mother asked, "My dear, did you wash your hands after playing before you ate that mango?" Chebet thought for a moment and shook her head. Her mother explained that tiny, invisible germs from the soil got onto the mango and into her tummy. From that day on, Chebet always remembered to use her superpower and wash her hands properly before eating anything!
Be a Water Saver Champion!
Our superpower uses water, and water is very precious! We must not waste it. When you are doing Step 3: SCRUB, you should turn off the tap. This saves a lot of water while you are busy scrubbing away the germs for 20 seconds. Once you are ready to rinse, you can turn it back on.
While Scrubbing (20 seconds):
GOOD! NOT GOOD!

Why We MUST Wash Our Hands
Washing our hands is like having a shield against sickness. It is one of the most important jobs a Health Hero has! Here is why it is so important:
- To send germs away! When we use soap and water, the germs are washed down the drain, far, far away from us.
- To keep our food safe. We love eating with our hands, right? Before you touch that delicious ugali or sweet mandazi, your hands must be clean to keep germs off your food.
- To stop sickness from spreading. When you wash your hands, you protect yourself, your friends at school, and your family at home from getting sick. You become a hero for everyone!
- To stay strong and healthy so you don't miss any fun, like playing football or learning new things in class!
The Handwashing Timetable! When to Wash
A good Health Hero knows the perfect time to use their handwashing superpower. Let's make a timetable for our hands!
- AFTER visiting the choo (toilet). This is a must!
- BEFORE eating any meal or snack.
- AFTER playing outside, especially with soil, sand, or animals like kuku (chickens).
- AFTER you cough, sneeze, or blow your nose. The germs from inside you are trying to escape!
- BEFORE you help your mother or father prepare food in the kitchen.
A Story from the Village: The Tale of Juma and Amina
Juma loved to play football. After the game, he would run straight to the table for his githeri, forgetting to wash his hands. Soon, Juma got a bad tummy ache and had to miss school and football for three days! His friend, Amina, always remembered to wash her hands with soap and water after playing and before eating. She never got the tummy ache. She stayed strong and healthy. When Juma came back, Amina showed him the right way to wash hands, and he never forgot again. Be like Amina, be a Handwashing Champion!
The 5 Super Steps to Perfectly Clean Hands!
Are you ready to learn the secret handwashing technique? It’s easy! Just follow these 5 steps. To help you remember how long to scrub, you can sing the "Happy Birthday" song two times!

Let's Do Some Health Maths!
Even heroes need to do mathematics! Let’s solve a problem together.
Problem: If one small bar of soap can be used for 40 hand washes, and your family of 4 people washes their hands 2 times before meals every day, how many days will the bar of soap last?
Step 1: Find the total number of washes per day.
4 people x 2 washes each = 8 washes per day.
Step 2: Divide the total washes the soap can do by the washes needed per day.
40 total washes / 8 washes per day = 5.
Answer: The bar of soap will last for 5 days!
Congratulations, You are a Health Hero!
Kazi nzuri! Excellent work! You have now learned the secret power of handwashing. You know what germs are, why we must fight them, when to wash, and how to do it perfectly.
Your mission now is to use this superpower every day and even teach it to your little brothers, sisters, and friends. By keeping your hands clean, you are keeping our community healthy and strong. Asante sana for being a Handwashing Champion!
