Course ContentMake-up basics
Hello, Future Superstar! ✨
Welcome to our super fun lesson on Make-up Basics! Have you ever seen someone with colourful lips or sparkly eyes for a wedding or a party? Or maybe you've seen actors in a school play with painted faces? That's make-up! Think of it like painting or drawing, but instead of paper, our canvas is our face. It's a fun way to play and be creative for special moments. But before we even think about colours, what is the most important step? Taking care of our beautiful skin!
First Things First: A Happy, Clean Face!
Before you paint a beautiful picture, you need a clean, smooth piece of paper, right? Our skin is the same! A clean and healthy face is the best start for anything. It’s the most important rule of skin care.
- Step 1: Wash Up! Use clean water and a gentle soap to wash your face. Gently wash away all the dust from playing outside.
- Step 2: Pat, Don't Rub! Use a clean, soft towel to gently pat your face dry.
- Step 3: Moisturize! Use a little bit of gentle cream or lotion (like Arimis or any lotion mum gives you) to keep your skin soft and happy.

What are the Basic Make-up Tools?
Just like a painter has brushes, we have some simple tools for make-up. The best part? You already have the best tools with you!
- Your Fingers: They are great for gently patting and blending! Just make sure they are super clean.
- Soft Brushes: These are like tiny, soft paintbrushes for putting on colours.
- Sponges: Soft and bouncy, they help to apply things smoothly.
Here is a little drawing of a make-up brush!

Let's Explore Some Fun Make-up!
For our lesson, we will only talk about simple and safe make-up that is fun for special occasions.
- Lip Gloss: This makes your lips look shiny and feel soft. It can be clear like water or have a little bit of colour, like the beautiful pink of a bougainvillea flower in Nairobi.
- Blush: This is a pink or reddish powder that you can put on your cheeks. It gives you a healthy glow, like the one you have after running and playing 'kati' with your friends! It can be the colour of a beautiful sunset over the Maasai Mara.
- Eyeshadow: This is the fun colour you can put on your eyelids. You can use colours that remind you of beautiful Kenya - the green of the tea farms in Kericho, the blue of the Indian Ocean at Diani, or the warm brown of the earth.
Story Time: Wanjiru's School PlayWanjiru was so excited! She was chosen to be the brave Queen in her school play. Her teacher said, "Wanjiru, to show everyone you are the Queen, we will give you some sparkly gold eyeshadow and a little red on your cheeks." Her teacher used a soft brush to gently apply the colours. When Wanjiru looked in the mirror, she gasped! The make-up helped her feel just like a royal queen. It was only for the play, and she washed it all off carefully before going home, feeling very proud of her performance.
Let's Do Some Make-up Math!
Imagine you are getting ready for a birthday party and you are allowed to use a little make-up. Let's see how long it takes!
Problem:
It takes 2 minutes to wash and dry your face.
It takes 1 minute to apply lip gloss.
It takes 2 minutes to apply a little blush on both cheeks.
How long does it take in total?
Let's add it up!
2 Minutes (Face Wash)
+ 1 Minute (Lip Gloss)
+ 2 Minutes (Blush)
-----------
5 Minutes (Total Time)
-----------
Wow! It only takes 5 minutes to get ready for the party!
The Golden Rules of Make-up!
Make-up is fun, but we must be very careful. Here are the most important rules to keep our skin safe and happy.
- ALWAYS Ask a Grown-up: Never, ever use make-up without asking your mum, dad, or guardian first. This is the number one rule!
- Don't Share Lip and Eye Make-up: Sharing things like lip gloss or eyeshadow brushes can spread germs. It's like sharing a toothbrush – it's better to use your own.
- Use Kid-Friendly Products: If you ever play with make-up, make sure it's made for kids or is very gentle. Grown-up make-up can sometimes be too strong for young skin.
- Wash It All Off: Never go to sleep with make-up on. Always wash your face clean before you go to bed so your skin can breathe and rest.

Fantastic work today! Remember, make-up is a fun way to be creative for a special day, like dressing up in a costume. But your happy, smiling, and kind face is the most beautiful thing in the whole world, with or without make-up. Keep shining!
