Uses of Water at Home (Nyumbani)
Our homes are where we use water the most! Think about your morning. What did you do? I bet you used water for many things. Here are some uses:
- Drinking: We drink water to stay healthy, strong, and full of energy for playing! Our bodies need water just like a car needs fuel.
- Cooking: Ask your parent or guardian! They use water to cook our delicious ugali, to boil githeri, and to wash our favourite vegetables like sukuma wiki.
- Bathing: We use water and soap to wash our bodies. This keeps us clean and washes away germs that can make us sick.
- Washing: We wash our hands, our clothes, and the dishes we eat from. A clean home is a happy and healthy home!
- Cleaning the House: We use water to mop the floors and wipe surfaces to keep our home sparkling clean.
A Story: A Day in Kamau's Life
Kamau wakes up in the morning. First, he brushes his teeth using water from the tap. Then, he takes a quick bath to get ready for school. His mother is in the kitchen, using water to make porridge for breakfast. After school, Kamau helps by watering the small vegetable garden (the shamba) behind their house. Before dinner, he washes his hands. See? Kamau used water all day long!

Uses of Water in Our Community
Water is not just for our homes. It does big jobs for everyone in our community, our country Kenya, and the whole world!
- Farming (Ukulima): Farmers need a lot of water to grow the food we eat, like maize, beans, and potatoes. This is called irrigation. Without water, our crops would not grow.
- For Our Animals (Wanyama): Just like us, animals need water to drink. Our cows (ng'ombe) and goats (mbuzi) need it. Wild animals like elephants and giraffes in our parks like Tsavo and Maasai Mara also need water from rivers and waterholes.
- Making Things (Industry): Big factories use water to make things like soda, juice, and even clothes!
- Putting out Fires: When there is a dangerous fire, brave firefighters use a lot of water to put it out and keep people safe.

Let's Do Some Fun Water Math!
Even in Environmental Activities, we can use a little math. Let's try a simple problem.
Problem:
Asha has a small shamba. In the morning, she uses 4 buckets of water
for her tomato plants. In the evening, she uses 3 more buckets of
water for her spinach.
How many buckets of water did Asha use in total?
Step 1: Water for tomatoes = 4 buckets
Step 2: Water for spinach = 3 buckets
Step 3: Add them together! 4 + 3 = ?
Answer:
4 + 3 = 7
Asha used 7 buckets of water in total! Great job!
Water is Precious!
As you can see, water does so many things for us! It is a gift from nature. Because it is so important, we must not waste it. Always remember to close the tap tightly after using it. Every single drop counts!
Asante sana for learning with me today!
Hello, Future Environmental Champions!
Have you ever been very, very thirsty after playing a fun game like bano or running around with your friends? What is the one thing you wanted more than anything? Water! Today, we are going to become Water Detectives and discover all the amazing and important jobs water does for us every single day. Let's dive in!
Uses of Water at Home
Our homes are the first place we see water working its magic. Think about your morning from the moment you wake up. Water is there!
- Drinking: Our bodies need water to stay healthy and strong. Just like a car needs petrol, we need water to run, play, and learn!
- Cooking: How do we cook our delicious ugali, githeri, or boil rice? Your mum or dad uses water! It helps make our food soft and tasty.
- Washing and Cleaning: Water helps us stay clean and healthy. We use it for:
- Bathing our bodies.
- Washing our hands to remove germs.
- Washing our school uniforms so we look smart.
- Washing plates and cups after eating.
- Mopping the floor to keep our house sparkling.
- Watering Plants and Animals: If you have a small garden (a shamba) with sukuma wiki or beautiful flowers, they need water to grow. Our animals, like chickens (kuku) or goats (mbuzi), also get very thirsty!
Image Suggestion: A vibrant and colorful illustration of a Kenyan family's home compound. In one corner, a mother is cooking on a jiko with a pot of steaming food. A child is drinking a glass of water nearby. In another corner, the father is washing the family car with a bucket. Another child is watering a small vegetable patch with a watering can. The style should be child-friendly and cheerful.
Water's Big Jobs in Our Community and Country
Water doesn't just work in our homes. It has some very big and important jobs all across Kenya!
- Farming (Agriculture): To grow enough food for everyone, big farms need a lot of water. They use a special method called irrigation, which is like giving the shamba a big drink of water using pipes and canals. The big rice farms in Mwea use a lot of water to grow the rice we eat.
RIVER ~~~~~~ +-------+ | +---->| PUMP |-------> PIPES -------> CROP CROP CROP | | +-------+ / / / / / +--------+ / / / / / (Irrigated Farm) - Making Electricity (Hydro-electric Power): Did you know water can create the light in our homes? At big dams, like the ones on the Tana River, the force of falling water is used to spin a giant machine called a turbine. This turbine then generates electricity! It's called Hydro-Electric Power, or HEP.
- Transport: On our big lakes and the ocean, water is like a road! People and goods travel on boats and big ships. Think of the ferry at Likoni in Mombasa that carries many people and cars across the water, or the fishing boats on Lake Victoria.
- Fun and Recreation: We also use water for fun! Swimming in a pool or at the beautiful beaches in Malindi and Diani is a popular way to cool down and have a good time.
A Story from Naivasha:Asha lives near Lake Naivasha. In the morning, she sees fishermen going out in their small boats to catch fish. Later, she sees big trucks being loaded with beautiful flowers from the nearby farms. These flower farms use water from the lake to grow flowers that are sent all over the world! In the afternoon, tourists ride on boats to see the hippos. For Asha's community, water means food, jobs, and fun!
Let's Do Some Water Math!
Water is so important, we even use it in our math problems. Let's try one together!
Problem: A family of 5 people lives in your neighbourhood. If each person should drink 8 glasses of water every day to be healthy, how many glasses of water does the whole family need for one day?
Step 1: Number of people in the family = 5
Step 2: Glasses of water one person needs = 8
Step 3: To find the total, we multiply!
5 (people) x 8 (glasses) = 40 glasses
Answer: The family needs 40 glasses of water in one day!
Water is Precious! Let's Save It.
Because water does so many jobs, it is very precious. We must not waste it. A person who saves water is a true Water Champion! Here is how you can be one:
- Turn off the tap tightly when you are not using it, especially when brushing your teeth.
- If you see a leaking tap at home or at school, tell a teacher or a parent immediately.
- Use a basin to wash your hands and face instead of letting the water run.
- Help your parents collect rainwater in tanks or buckets. This water is great for washing floors or watering the garden.

Water for Our Shamba (Agricultural Use)
Just like us, plants and animals cannot live without water. In Kenya, farming is very important. We call our farms or gardens a shamba. Water helps our crops grow so we can have food to eat.
- Watering Crops: Farmers use water for their sukuma wiki (kales), maize, beans, and tomatoes to grow big and healthy. This is called irrigation.
- Water for Animals: Our animals like ng'ombe (cows), mbuzi (goats), and kuku (chickens) all need to drink water every day to be healthy.
A Story about Kamau's Shamba:Kamau has a small shamba behind his home. Every morning, he takes his watering can to the river to fetch water. He gently waters his young maize plants and his sukuma wiki. He knows that without this water, his plants would dry up, and his family would have no vegetables. Water makes his shamba green and full of life!

Let's Do Some Water Math!
Did you know we can use math to understand our water use? Let's try a simple calculation. Imagine a family of 4 people. Each person should drink about 2 glasses of water a day to be healthy.
How many glasses of water does the whole family drink in one day?
Step 1: Write down the number of people in the family.
Number of people = 4
Step 2: Write down the number of glasses each person drinks.
Glasses per person = 2
Step 3: Multiply the number of people by the glasses per person.
4 (people) x 2 (glasses) = 8
Answer: The family drinks 8 glasses of water in one day!
Water for Power and Factories (Industrial and Energy Use)
Water can do big, powerful things! It can even help us get electricity to light our homes and schools.
- Making Electricity: In Kenya, we have big dams like the Masinga Dam on the Tana River. The water flows very fast and turns big wheels called turbines. When these turbines spin, they create electricity! This is called hydroelectric power.
- In Factories: Factories use water to make things like juice, soda, bread, and even clothes! Water is used for mixing ingredients, cooling down machines, and cleaning.
Image Suggestion: [A simple and clear cartoon diagram for children showing the process of hydroelectric power. It should show a large dam, water flowing through a pipe to turn a big wheel (turbine), which is connected to a generator with a lightning bolt symbol, and finally power lines going to a happy home with a light bulb switched on.]

Splish, Splash! Water is Fun! (Recreational Use)
Water is not just for work and survival; it's also for having fun! Playing in water is called recreation.
- Swimming: Many of us love to swim! We can swim in a pool, a river, or even the big Indian Ocean at the coast in places like Mombasa or Diani.
- Boating and Fishing: People go boating on lakes like Lake Naivasha or Lake Victoria. Fishing is also a fun activity that gives us delicious fish to eat!
Water is Precious - Let's Save It!
Wow! Water does so much for us, doesn't it? From the cup of tea we drink in the morning, to the ugali we eat for dinner, to the lights in our homes, and the fun we have at the lake. Water is everywhere, helping us live.
Because water is so important, we must take care of it. We must promise to never waste water. Always close the tap when you are not using it!
Activity for Today: Try to count all the different ways you use water at home. Share what you learned with your family. Asante sana for learning with me!
