Habari Mwanafunzi! Welcome to the World of Road Signs!
Imagine you are on a fun road trip with your family to see the beautiful flamingos at Lake Nakuru. How does the driver know which road to take? How do you find a place to eat lunch or get petrol? The answer is our helpful friends on the road: Traffic Signs!
Traffic signs are like a secret language for the road. Today, we are going to learn about the most helpful and friendly family of signs: the Informatory Signs. They don't give orders, but they give us very important information to make our journey safe and easy. Let's begin!
What Are Informatory Signs?
Think of informatory signs as the polite guides of the road. Their main job is to inform you. They tell you where you are, what is ahead, and where to find important places.
- Their Colour: They are usually blue or green.
- Their Shape: Most of them are rectangular (like a book or a door).
- Their Job: To give information, directions, and details about services ahead.
Image Suggestion: A bright, cheerful cartoon illustration of a friendly rectangular blue sign with a smiley face, wearing a guide's hat and pointing down a road in a lush Kenyan landscape. The style should be colourful and inviting for a young student.

- A knife and fork sign means a restaurant or "hoteli" is nearby.
- A petrol pump sign means you can find a petrol station.
- An aeroplane sign shows the way to an airport, like Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Let's Do Some Road Trip Math!
Informatory signs can even help us with math! Imagine you see a green sign on the road.
The sign says: Naivasha 80 kmIf your family's car is travelling at a speed of 40 kilometres per hour (km/h), how long will it take to reach Naivasha?
We can calculate this! We use a simple formula:
Time = Distance ÷ Speed
Step 1: Find the Distance.
The sign tells us the distance is 80 km.
Step 2: Find the Speed.
The car's speed is 40 km/h.
Step 3: Do the division.
Time = 80 km ÷ 40 km/h
Time = 2 hours
Wow! It will take you 2 hours to get to Naivasha. See? Road signs make you smarter!
A Story: Juma's Trip to See the Elephants
Juma and his family were driving to Tsavo National Park. Juma was the "Sign Detective". His job was to spot all the informatory signs. First, he shouted, "Look! A sign with a knife and fork!" Dad smiled and said, "Good eye, Juma! We will stop there for lunch." A little later, he saw a big brown sign with an elephant on it that said, "Tsavo East National Park - Main Gate 5 km". Juma was so excited! The signs had guided them perfectly. Thanks to the informatory signs, they arrived safely and saw many, many elephants!
