Habari! Welcome to the World of Computers!
Hello there! Are you ready to learn a new superpower? Today, we will learn how to use a computer mouse. Think of the mouse as your magic wand for the computer. Just like you point at something you want in a duka, the mouse lets you point at and choose things on the computer screen. It's your special tool to tell the computer, "I want to go here!" or "I want to open that!" Let's begin this exciting journey together!
Meet Your New Friend: The Computer Mouse
A mouse is a small device you hold in your hand and move around on a flat surface. When you move the mouse, a small arrow on the screen moves too! This arrow is called the cursor or pointer.
Most mice have a few basic parts. Let's look at them:

(Cable or "Tail")
- The Body: This is where you rest the palm of your hand. It's shaped to be comfortable.
- Left Button: This is the main button, the one you'll use the most. Think of it as the "Go" or "Choose" button. Your index finger (the pointing finger) should rest here.
- Right Button: This button gives you a menu of options or choices. Your middle finger rests here.
- Scroll Wheel: This little wheel in the middle helps you move up and down a page, just like scrolling through messages on a phone.
Image Suggestion: A brightly lit, clean photo showing a person's hand correctly holding a computer mouse. The fingers should be clearly positioned: index finger on the left button, middle finger on the right, and the palm resting comfortably on the body of the mouse. Add labels pointing to each part: "Index Finger", "Middle Finger", "Palm".
The 5 Magic Moves of the Mouse
To become a mouse expert, you need to learn five basic moves. Once you master these, you can do almost anything on a computer! It's as easy as learning the steps to a fun dance.
-
Pointing (Kuelekeza)
This is the easiest move! Simply move your mouse on the desk and watch the arrow (cursor) move on the screen. Move it until the tip of the arrow is on top of the item you want. It's like pointing at the ripest mango on a tree before you pick it.
-
Clicking (Kubofya Mara Moja)
A "click" is when you press and quickly release the left button once. This is how you select something. Imagine you are at the market, and you tap on the best tomato to show the seller which one you want. That's a click!
-
Double-Clicking (Kubofya Mara Mbili)
A "double-click" means pressing the left button two times very, very quickly. Click-click! This action usually opens things, like a folder or a program. It's like knocking on a door twice to be let inside.
How fast is a double-click? It must be quick!
Step 1: First Click | | (Time between clicks must be very short, less than half a second!) V Step 2: Second Click || V Result: The item OPENS! -
Right-Clicking (Kubofya Kulia)
When you press and release the right button once, a special menu appears. This menu shows you all the possible actions you can take with an item. It's like asking a waiter for the menu at a cafe. The menu shows you all your choices: chapati, mandazi, chai, soda...
-
Dragging and Dropping (Kukokota na Kuachilia)
This move lets you move items from one place to another on the screen. It's like picking up your books from the table and putting them in your school bag. Here’s how you do it:
- Point at the item you want to move.
- Press and HOLD DOWN the left mouse button. Don't let go!
- While still holding the button, move (drag) the mouse to where you want the item to go. You will see a "ghost" of the item moving with your cursor.
- Release (drop) the left mouse button. The item is now in its new place!
Real-World Story: Juma was working on his school project about Kenyan wildlife. His computer desktop was very messy, with pictures of lions, elephants, and giraffes all over the place! He created a folder named "Wildlife Project". Using the drag and drop move, he picked up each animal picture, one by one, and neatly moved them into the folder. Soon, his desktop was clean and organised, all thanks to mastering the "drag and drop" magic move!
The Changing Cursor
Keep an eye on your cursor! It can change shape to tell you what the computer is doing or what you can do next. It's like a traffic officer using hand signals.

Hongera! You are on your way!
Congratulations! You have just learned the most important mouse skills. You now know how to Point, Click, Double-Click, Right-Click, and Drag & Drop. Like any new skill, the secret to becoming an expert is practice. So, find some icons on the computer screen and try moving them around. Try opening folders. The more you practice, the easier it will become.
You are now in control of the computer. Well done, and keep learning!
