The Secret of the Bubble!

How does it work? It's all about gravity! The air bubble is lighter than the liquid, so it always wants to float to the very highest point inside the curved vial.

• When a surface is perfectly level (horizontal), the highest point of the vial is exactly in the middle. So, the bubble rests perfectly between the two guide lines. Sawa sawa!
• When a surface is perfectly plumb (vertical), the bubble in the vertical vial will be perfectly between its guide lines.
• If the surface is tilted, the bubble will move away from the center, towards the higher side.

Real-World Scenario: Imagine your friend Juma is building a small chicken coop in his shamba. He lays the first line of bricks just by looking. It seems straight. But when he uses a spirit level, he sees the bubble is way off to the left! This means the left side is too high. If he continues, his wall will be weak and might even fall. The spirit level helps him fix the mistake before it becomes a big problem!

Let's Get to Work! How to Use Your Spirit Level

Using a spirit level is easy, but you must be careful to get a true reading.

1. Fagia Kwanza! (Clean First!): Make sure the surface of your object (like a brick or piece of timber) and the edge of your level are clean. A small piece of dirt or a stone can give you a wrong reading.
2. Place it Firmly: Lay the spirit level flat on the surface you are checking. Don't press down too hard, just let it sit firmly.
3. Look Straight Down: Look at the vial directly from above. If you look from an angle, it might seem like the bubble is in a different position.
4. Read the Bubble:
   • If the bubble is centered between the two lines, your surface is level. Hongera! (Congratulations!)
   • If the bubble is to the left of the center, the left side is too high.
   • If the bubble is to the right of the center, the right side is too high.
5. Adjust and Check Again: Adjust your work by adding or removing material until the bubble is perfectly centered.
