His ultimate job came when he was 17 years old, he was crowned King of Portugal. As King his power and popularity grew as the country of Portugal received the income of gold and diamonds from it’s colony Brazil. One fifth of every ton extracted from the mines in Brazil was given to the King. This wealth allowed King John V to make decisions without having to ask his advisers for contributions. This propelled the monarchy of Portugal to an absolute monarchy.
